This is the blog of Int'l volunteers in Egaonomorim Kurogi by Sansonjuku.

Hello my name is Lance Toyoshima and I am an American volunteer of Japanese descent. I live in Hawaii but have spent the past year doing volunteer work in France and Canada. I am very happy to be here in Kurogi with Sansonjuku and am excited to learn as much as I can about the community and the work that we will be doing during this 80 day project. Thus far we have started helping the local farmers harvest their tea, assisted with preparing their mushroom field, and cut bamboo in the forest for later use. We also hosted a welcome party at our lodging, Egao No Mori, which is a great place to live and work. Everyone has been so friendly, helpful, and polite. The work can be physically challenging, but we are in beautiful surroundings here in the country, and working outdoors is so pleasant and relaxing. The local farmers and our staff work alongside us and provide clear instructions and support at all times. We also have the chance to learn Japanese as well as the local customs and traditions. This is truly an amazing experience so far, and I feel very fortunate to have found such a great organization. Living and working in Japan so far as been just an enriching and educational experience, and I cannot begin to describe how warm and receptive the people have been. On our free day we went walking in the village, and met a couple at the temple who invited us in to have tea and snacks with them. We communicated in English and Japanese, and shared stories and experiences with each other. I have travelled and volunteered in different countries, but I cannot recall a place where the local people have been this kind, generous, and welcoming. I would encourage any prospective volunteers to come and take part in this project and learn more about this incredible culture. The staff of Sansonjuku are simply the nicest people I have every met, and if you come with an open mind and are receptive to the local ways; you will be in for the experience of a lifetime.
