Weekly report 1 - 2018 04 30 – 2018 05 06

I am Eliot Geoffroy, a French student in engineering. I come from a city near Paris and I came to Japan in order to discover and participate in an environmental project which aim is to preserve the rural area of Kurogi, as well as its traditional methods. I also wanted to discover the Japanese culture and try to learn its language.

The first week in Egao no Mori was really enjoyable!
We discovered the life in the volunteer house, including all the participative tasks and our group is becoming closer. Everyone is inclined to participate and as a French foreigner, I discovered many delicious dishes.

But most importantly, we participated into many diverse works. At the beginning of the week, we had several introduction times so we could understand better the life in Egao no Mori and the origins and reasons of the Sansonjuku project. Then, we started the real work. We cleaned a field of bamboo, performed maintenance in the storages, cut grass for the goats, cleaned the grass cutting machines and cleaned the walls of a rice field.

In addition to that, we had a complete day of work with Makoto and a two days special event. The day of work with Makoto was very rich of knowledge about rice culture and also really rich in activities. We started by preparing the rice seeds on plates with one layer of earth, one layer of rice and one layer of earth again. Then, we loaded everything (and everyone) on the truck and went planting the seeds in Makoto’s field. After that, we had a very delicious meal in the house of Makoto’s parents, who were very nice to us. In the afternoon, we went cleaning the sides of Makoto’s field, which was a little more physical, especially with the rain. But at the end, we were happy of what we did and again, thanked by a delicious meal with Makoto’s family.
The tea harvesting event was also really enjoyable. We welcomed around 30 people in Egao no Mori and participate with them on an interesting event centered around tea. We collected the tea leaves, cooked them in a traditional way, rolled them and cooked them again. We even had the chance to taste our own tea along with different kinds of tea. Yummy!

At the end of the week, I can say I am really glad to be here and that time seems to fly but as a paradox, I have the impression I am here since a long time.
